How to use Spectrum 200SC insecticide?

Spectrum 200SC insecticide needs to be applied to where the lawn grubs are doing the damage. Lawn grubs, like African black beetle larvae eat the roots of the lawn and therefore it needs to be applied to the lawn at the label rate (25ml/100m2) and then watered into the soil where the lawn grubs are. “Watering-in” can be done with a hose or sprinkler, but it’s best to setup a sprinkler and apply 12mm of irrigation. The best way to check for 12mm is to have a old tuna can on the lawn and once it fills up 1.2cm high you are good. The lawn grubs are beneath the surface so you won’t see them die but you should see the damage stop spreading.

The technical stuff

Spectrum 200SC works best when the target lawn grubs, like African Black Beetle larvae, are in their early stages of growth, so it’s critical to apply in early Spring before significant damage occurs. Before you buy Spectrum 200 SC it probably makes sense to understand what the 200 and the SC stand for. It’s very common in professional products for their names to share with the user the concentration and the product formulation type and so the “200” stands for 200g/L Imidacloprid and the SC stands for suspension concentrate, this is a type of concentrate where the active is suspended in water. At The Lawn Shed we love asking technical questions, so please feel free to contact us.

Safety precautions

Insecticides can be hazardous to our wildlife so with a few simple precautions we can protect them. Follow the label and this guideline:

  • Do not spray on plants in flower
  • Do not let animals feed on the grass
  • Store out of reach of children and out of sunlight
  • Triple rinse the bottle before disposal
  • Do not swallow (obviously)
  • Wear the correct PPE (personal protective equipment)
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin, wash immediately if you get some on you

What's in it?

Before you buy Spectrum 200SC you probably should understand what the 200 and the SC mean. The SC stands for soluble concentrate, this means it disperses readily in water, which makes it easy to add to a lawn sprayer and apply. The 200 refers to the high concentration of this professional quality lawn grub insecticide. The active ingredient called Imidacloprid is concentrated at, 200g/L, hence why it’s called Spectrum 200SC.

Q & A

How do I get the best results?

A nice even coverage of the lawn is critical and thorough watering in is the best way to achieve good results. The product is best applied before the insects get to big or become adults, that means an application before the first week of September.

How much water should I apply to water in?

Watering is required to get the product into the soil, this will require 12mm.

Is this safe for all turf types?

Absolutely and it even comes with an option to use on some garden plants for sucking insects like Aphids.

How long before I see results?

Spectrum kills the insects below the soil, so you won’t see them come to the surface but you will start to see your lawn recover.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

It’s best to allow the product to dry before walking on your lawn. Like most products keep the product container out of reach of children and pets.

Do I need to do anything else to keep my lawn looking good?

There’s a whole range of things you can do, the basics start with fertilising, weed control and insect protection. We have a great calendar and some great packs that help you solve all those problems in one go.
