Choosing the right granular fertiliser is one of the most important steps for achieving a healthy, green lawn. With so many options available, it pays to understand what makes each product different. Here’s what to look for when selecting a granular fertiliser—and how our new range at The Lawn Shed fits the bill.

Understand Your Lawn’s Needs

  • Grass Type: Know whether you have couch, buffalo, kikuyu, rye, or fescue. Some fertilisers are tailored to specific varieties.
  • Lawn Goals: Are you after a quick green-up, year-round health, or recovery from stress? Your goal will help guide your choice.

Nitrogen Release Curve

Granular fertilisers differ in how quickly they deliver nitrogen:
  • Quick-Release: Provides a fast boost, great for instant results but may require more frequent applications.
  • Slow-Release: Feeds your lawn gradually over several weeks, reducing the risk of burn and supporting steady growth. Ideal for consistent results and less mowing.
Always check the product’s nitrogen release curve—or speed of delivery.

Prill Size

Prill size affects how evenly nutrients are distributed:
  • Smaller Prills: Ideal for fine-bladed lawns, ensuring even coverage and reducing patchiness.
  • Larger Prills: Suitable for larger areas or tougher turf, but can be less uniform.
Choose a prill size that matches your lawn type and spreader settings for best results. SGN is simply an average size guide number, where 300SGN means 3mm prill.

The Right Balance of Nutrients

Look for the NPK ratio—these numbers indicate the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K):
  • Nitrogen (N): Drives leaf growth and colour.
  • Phosphorus (P): Supports root development.
  • Potassium (K): Strengthens stress resistance and overall health.
Select a fertiliser with a balance that fits your lawn’s needs and the season. For example, higher nitrogen in spring.

Other Additives

Proefessional granular fertilisers (like ours) often include:
  • Iron: For deeper green colour and improved turf strength.
  • Wetting Agents: Help water penetrate the soil, reducing dry spots.
  • Trace Elements: Micronutrients like magnesium and manganese for overall lawn health.
  • Organic Acis: Improves soil structure and turns nutrients into plant available forms.
  • Microbes: To improve soil and plant health.
